What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool within a therapeutic relationship. Within this relationship the client remains in control at all times. The process of hypnotherapy has many similarities to other psychological therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy. In fact it would be impossible to work as a Hypnotherapist without good counselling skills and a knowledge of psychology and psychotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy, results are often noticed after the first session and far fewer sessions are generally needed than with other psychotherapy approaches. On average a course of treatment will last for 3 - 6 sessions, although more complex issues such as clinical depression or serious trauma are likely to require more.
In all forms of psychological therapy the aim is to help the client to deal with negative thoughts, undesirable habits and feelings so that they are enabled to move forward with more choices available to them. This may enable the client to respond more positively to themselves and the world around them, unlocking their potential and allowing personal development. These types of therapy are often described as psychotherapy and are useful in the treatment of emotional and psychological issues.
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy in it’s own right which can be used to treat emotional, psychological and some physical issues. Hypnosis may be used by psychotherapists practicing other disciplines but within hypnotherapy it is the major part of therapy. Techniques will be drawn from a range of other psychotherapy approaches and combined to result in an approach which is eclectic and centred around the client’s unconscious mind.
The advantage of hypnotherapy is that it works with the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is the home of our habits, beliefs and memories and these are most easily reached using hypnotherapy. The conscious mind is more critical and tends to be busy with everyday thoughts. It can also be defensive and filled with negative thoughts. Hypnotherapy can be used to calm this part of the mind so that suggestions for change can be delivered to the unconscious which is more accepting to new thoughts. In addition the unconscious is the home of imagination which means that suggestions can be delivered in indirect ways using metaphor, symbolism and story telling. This reduces the risk of these new positive ideas being thrown out by the conscious mind which is happier when working with established ways of thinking.
As with all other psychotherapy approaches the best results are obtained if therapy is entered into wholeheartedly by an individual seeking change for themselves. It is not a miracle cure which will do all of the work for you but if you are motivated to change it will help you to find resources which you never knew existed. Hypnotherapy could help you to make changes you never thought possible.
Hypnosis is a relaxing experience and this means that during the course of therapy you will have regular opportunities for relaxation which brings benefits in itself. Although therapy may sometimes deal with uncomfortable memories or thoughts, techniques are used to help you deal with these more comfortably. In addition to dealing with the specific details of your issue Hypnotherapy generally leaves you feeling more relaxed, confident and positive.
